Non-Lucrative Visa: Your ticket to life in Spain without work

Imagine living in the sun-soaked landscapes of Spain, sipping coffee at a charming café, and exploring vibrant cities—all without the stress of a job. The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) offers just that, allowing individuals to reside in Spain without engaging in any work activities. This visa is perfect for those who have the financial means to support themselves and their families while enjoying the laid-back Spanish lifestyle.
The Non-Lucrative Visa extends beyond the primary applicant, allowing certain family members to join in the Spanish adventure. Eligible family members include a spouse or registered partner, as well as dependent children and parents forming part of the family unit.
To apply for a Non-Lucrative Visa, applicants must first complete and sign the national visa application form. Proof of financial means is essential, demonstrating sufficient funds to cover living expenses in Spain for the first year. This entails providing an original and a copy of documents showing a minimum amount of 400% of the IPREM (Public Income Index), plus an additional 100% of the IPREM for each dependent family member.

Health insurance is crucial; applicants must submit an original and a copy of a public or private health insurance certificate from an authorized entity in Spain. This insurance must cover all health risks under the Spanish public health system without limitations, copayments, or deductibles. No travel insurance with medical assistance coverage will be accepted. For those over the age of majority, an original and a copy of a criminal record certificate issued by the country of residence within the last five years is needed, complete with an apostille and issued within the last 90 days. Additionally, a medical certificate must confirm that the applicant does not suffer from any diseases posing a severe risk to public health, in accordance with the International Health Regulations of 2005.
To prove residence, include a voter ID (INE/IFE) or a residency card for foreigners. Payment of fees requires completing and signing two copies of form 790 code 052 at the Consulate Office.
The application must be submitted in person, and for minors, one parent must sign the application. After submission, a receipt with a tracking code will be provided. The visa must be collected in person within one month of receiving notification of a favourable resolution. If the application is denied, applicants will receive a written notification detailing the reasons. They can file a restitution appeal at the consulate within one month or a contentious administrative appeal with the High Court of Justice in Madrid within two months.
The Non-Lucrative Visa is valid for 90 days, and once in Spain, visa holders must apply for a Foreign Identity Card within one month at the appropriate Foreigners’ Office or Police Station. This opportunity to embrace the Spanish lifestyle, surrounded by loved ones, can truly be a rewarding chapter in life.
