THE GOLDEN MILE

The Golden Mile.
Marbella’s icon of elegance and seaside lifestyle

The Golden Mile marks Marbella’s luxury origins, with landmarks like Puente Romano and Marbella Club. Blending high-end beachfront properties, designer boutiques, and top-tier restaurants, blends sophisticated coastal living with easy access to essential amenities.

What defines The Golden Mile as a unique enclave within Marbella?

The Golden Mile has become the benchmark for elegance since Marbella transformed from a charming fishing village into a haven for royalty and the jet set. It’s not a specific neighbourhood, but rather a district that stretches along the coast between Marbella town centre and Puerto Banús. In this strip, elegant stunning beachfront properties grace the shores of the Mediterranean and coexist with designer stores, art galleries, the finest restaurants, and hotels where guests would happily stay forever.

With the Sierra Blanca mountains as a backdrop, the views from any angle are perfect, setting the stage for a tranquil life by the beach and enjoying a relaxed vibe, all within walking distance of essential amenities. Banks, supermarkets, schools, and hospitals are conveniently close. The Golden Mile provides the opportunity to reside in paradise while maintaining proximity to all essential amenities. It’s not just a place; it embodies a way of life—a symbol of exclusivity, sophistication, and the pursuit of beauty in all its forms.

Unveiling the rich history of Marbella’s Golden Mile

This is where it all began, and that beginning is associated with a name: Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1922-2004). He was a visionary entrepreneur and aristocrat who played a pivotal role in shaping Marbella into a world-renowned exclusive tourism destination. Born in Madrid into an illustrious family with roots in Germany and Spain, Prince Alfonso spent his formative years immersed in two cultures, fostering a cosmopolitan outlook that would later shape his transformative endeavours.

After World War II, Prince Alfonso settled in Marbella, captivated by its natural beauty and untapped potential. Recognising the town’s allure for discerning travellers, he embarked on an ambitious mission to transform it into a haven for exclusive tourism. His vision was not merely about creating opulent accommodations; it was about crafting an unparalleled experience that would redefine the very essence of prestige travel.

In 1954, Prince Alfonso’s vision materialised with the establishment of the Marbella Club Hotel, an oasis of sophistication that set a new standard for unique hospitality, earning him the nickname “Prince Olé Olé.” His success inspired him to extend his vision to the surrounding area, which he saw as a haven for elegant residences and complementary businesses, such as the Puente Romano Beach Resort. His entrepreneurial efforts consolidated the Golden Mile as a world-renowned exclusive destination that persists to this day.

Where is The Golden Mile located in Marbella?

Since The Golden Mile represents more of a district than a specific neighbourhood, its boundaries are fluid. Initially, the nickname ‘Golden Mile’ emerged from the distance between the iconic Marbella Club Hotel and the Puente Romano Beach Resort, an area that remains the district’s heart. Gradually, this sophisticated enclave expanded its reach, encompassing the beachfront properties stretching between Marbella’s historic centre and Puerto Banús, all united by an aura of exclusivity and prestige.

The Golden Mile’s boundaries aren’t officially set, so they vary slightly depending on who you ask. Still, most agree it covers these key areas:

Western Extremes

Bordering the glamorous marina of Puerto Banús, this enclave is home to a collection of upscale neighbourhoods.

Eastern Side

This area is The Golden Mile’s cultural epicentre, brimming with iconic landmarks such as the Marbella Club, Michelin-starred restaurants helmed by renowned chef Dani García, exclusive boutiques, and captivating art galleries.

Northern Foothills

Lodged amidst the verdant foothills of the Sierra Blanca mountains, this area is renowned for its collection of exclusive residential developments, featuring an array of high-end apartments and expansive villas.

Here are some distances to other areas of Marbella calculated from the El Piruli, a unique monument designed by architects Cepedano and Barrios, which marks the entrance to The Golden Mile from the centre of Marbella:

Old Town Marbella. 1.8 km – 8 minutes. Directions

Nueva Andalucía. 5.2 km – 9 minutes. Directions

Puerto Banús. 6.3 km – 11 minutes. Directions

Estepona. 31.1 km – 28 minutes. Directions

Málaga International Airport. 53 km – 36 minutes drive with toll payment. Directions

Gibraltar International Airport. 71.3 km – 1.06 hour. Directions

Note that the Costa del Sol is connected by two main highways: the A7 and the AP7. The AP7 is a toll road that offers faster travel, especially during the busy summer months.

What is the size of The Golden Mile’s area?

The Golden Mile of Marbella stretches approximately 7.5 km along the stunning Mediterranean coastline, known for its unmatched exclusivity. Despite the name, this “mile” represents not its length but the extraordinary value and prestige of the properties in this sought-after area.

What types of homes are available in The Golden Mile?

Along the coast stretches a privileged strip home to some of the most luxurious homes in the Mediterranean: a collection of outstanding beachfront villas, mansions, and penthouses with direct access to a long sandy beach and views of the yachts anchored there. Older properties along the shoreline are being renovated, adding to their charm and appeal. In the northern area, elevated land offers elegant homes and developments with stunning, clear views of the Mediterranean.

Is The Golden Mile a safe area?

The Golden Mile is designed with safety in mind, offering a secure and peaceful environment for residents and visitors. With pedestrian-friendly streets, gated communities, and smooth traffic flow, it ensures a tranquil living experience. Its proximity to Marbella’s city centre means easy access to police stations, with regular patrols providing added security throughout the area.

What’s the cost of buying a home in The Golden Mile?

Villa Sierra Blanca

Marbella’s Golden Mile boasts a diverse range of properties, from luxurious villas to exclusive apartments and townhouses. Prices vary widely depending on location and amenities. Along the beachfront, properties command premium prices, with villas reaching upwards of €30,000,000 and apartments exceeding €10,000 per square meter. Inland, opulent developments offer townhouses starting at €1,600,000, while more affordable options can be found in areas like Las Lomas de Marbella.

Which are the icons of The Golden Mile Area?

The Golden Mile would not be the same without two emblematic properties: Marbella Club Hotel and Puente Romano Beach Resort. These two hotels, more than just accommodation, are symbols of the history, style and glamour that define this privileged area. In fact, The Golden Mile earned its name because, in its early days, it only stretched for one mile between these two properties.

Founded in 1954 by Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Marbella Club Hotel marked a turning point in Marbella’s tourist destination. Its Andalusian style with interior courtyards, bougainvillea and a charming atmosphere, attracted the European elite of the 60s and 70s, making it an icon of the international jet set. The extensive gardens designed by Jean-Pierre Feray, the private beach and the villas with pools and private grasslands, create an oasis of elegance and exclusivity.

Years in the making, envisioned by Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, Puente Romano rose in 1979 as a luxurious Andalusian village by Mr. Mouaffak Al Midani. Inspired by André Gorius, its whitewashed houses and lush gardens echo the region’s charm. Guests can choose from elegant suites and villas, some beachfront, outdoor pools, tennis courts, a gym, a spa, more than 20 restaurants, a private beach club, and an 18-hole golf course. Puente Romano is recognized for exceptional service and awarded as Best Golf Resort, Spain’s Best Spa Resort, and Europe’s Leading Lifestyle Hotel.

Following the construction of the Puente Romano Beach Resort, the Saudi Royal Family began building their summer palace on The Golden Mile. Located next to the King Abdul Aziz Mosque and inspired by the design of The White House, the property is estimated to cover approximately 50 hectares, making it one of the largest on The Golden Mile. It features several pavilions, extensive gardens, swimming pools, a helipad, a mosque, and even a private hospital. It is important to note that information about the Saudi Royal Family’s summer palace is limited due to its private nature.
